Windows Phone Sales More Than 1.5M In First Six Weeks

Windows Phone Sales More Than 1.5M In First Six Weeks ; Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) said manufacturers of its Windows-based phones sold more than 1.5 million of the devices in the first six weeks since they hit the market.

In an article on the company website, Achim Berg--the corporate vice president of Microsoft's Mobile Communications Business & Marketing Group--said sales are in line with the company's expectations.

The software company began selling its Windows phones--which aren't made by Microsoft but rather by handset producers such as Samsung Electronics Co. (SSNHY, 005930.SE) and HTC Corp.(HTCXF, 2498.TW)--in November as it looks to make a dent in the highly competitive smartphone market. The phones operate on a new Windows Phone 7 mobile operating system.

Apple Inc. (AAPL) sold 14.1 million iPhones, among the industry-leading smartphones, in the company's fourth quarter ended Sept. 25. Research In Motion Ltd. (RIMM, RIM.T) earlier this month said it shipped 14.2 million of its BlackBerry smartphones in its most recent quarter. The number of smartphone users whose phones run Google Inc.'s (GOOG) Android operating system also have been growing sharply of late.

Still, Berg noted that stacking up the Windows phones' initial sales to competitors is "a bit of apples-and-oranges comparison." He also said Microsoft's "numbers are similar to the performance of other first-generation mobile platforms." Shares of Microsoft recently climbed 23 cents to $28.04. The stock has fallen 8% this year.
