This is the game of the season so far.

United remain at the top of the Premier League but following their 1-0 defeat at Arsenal they are just three points clear.

On Wednesday they qualified for their fourth Champions League final and can make it another memorable double if they maintain control at the top of the Premier League.

However, if Chelsea win at Old Trafford they will move to the top on goal difference – currently both teams have +38 – for the first time since November.

In 37 Premier League games between these great rivals, United have won 10 while Chelsea have won 13 with 14 drawn.

At Old Trafford in the competition, Chelsea have won five and drawn seven of 18 visits.

Last season Chelsea, defending their Premier League title, won 2-1 at Old Trafford. Joe Cole and Didier Drogba gave Chelsea a 2-0 lead before Federico Macheda netted a consolation goal for United.

When the teams met at Stamford Bridge in March Chelsea won 2-1 to keep, what appeared at the time, faint title hopes still alive. It may prove to be a most valuable win.

Wayne Rooney gave United a deserved interval advantage but Chelsea staged a stirring fightback with David Luiz equalised before Frank Lampard’s disputed penalty secured three priceless points after Chelsea substitute Yuri Zhirkov clashed with Chris Smalling.

To make matters worse for United, Nemanja Vidic was sent off in stoppage time after receiving a second yellow card for a foul on Ramires.

This is the fifth meeting between the sides; in addition to the league game, they began the season with the Community Shield at Wembley with United winning 3-1.

And in the recent Champions League clashes, United won 1-0 at Stamford Bridge and 2-1 at Old Trafford.

United have two of their last three at Old Trafford where they are unbeaten, have dropped just two points and have conceded just nine goals.

United miss Darren Fletcher, Owen Hargreaves and Anders Lindegaard. But Paul Scholes is available after completing a three-match domestic suspension.

Stat of the game: Chelsea are the last team to win a League game at Old Trafford, 13 months ago, when Didier Drogba got the winner. Since then, United have won 18 games and drawn one.
