Maryland's Williams retires from coaching, Gary Williams announced :

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Maryland basketball coach Gary Williams announced his retirement Thursday, saying "it's the right time" for him to end a career that included leading his alma mater to the 2002 national championship.

Williams, 66, coached for 33 years, the last 22 at Maryland, where he played as a guard in 1964-67.

His career record is 668-380, including 461-252 at Maryland. Under his direction, the Terrapins went to the NCAA tournament 14 times, won or shared three Atlantic Coast Conference titles and reached the Final Four twice.

My entire career has been an unbelievable blessing. I am fiercely proud of the program we have built here," Williams said. "I couldn't have asked any more from my players, my assistant coaches, the great Maryland fans and this great university. Together, we did something very special here."

MORE COLLEGE BASKETBALL: SI.com reported that CBS Sports parted ways with Gus Johnson, a play-by-play mainstay on its college basketball coverage for 16 years, after the two sides could not agree on a new deal. ... Connecticut swingman Jamal Coombs-McDaniel, who was recently arrested on drug charges, plans to transfer from the national champs, the school said.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Florida coach Will Muschamp finalized his contract. He received a $750,000 signing bonus, making his first year of the five-year deal worth more than $3.25 million. His average salary will be about $2.75 million annually.

GOLF: Tom Lehman shot a bogey-free five-under 67 to take a one-stroke lead in the first round of the Regions Tradition at Shoal Creek in Birmingham, Ala. ...

Bill Haas matched the tournament record for low opening round at the Wells Fargo Championship with an eight-under 64 and a two-shot lead.

NFL:
Brad Nessler and Mike Mayock will serve as the new announcing team for NFL Network's Thursday night games. The network said they would be replacing Bob Papa, Matt Millen and Joe Theismann. Papa and Theismann will remain with NFL Network in other roles.

TENNIS:
Novak Djokovic extended his season-opening winning streak to 29 matches at the Madrid Open, equaling the best start in men's tennis in 25 years. He defeated Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, 6-1, 6-2, and advance to the quarterfinals. Djokovic is tied for third with Ivan Lendl for the best season start since 1980. In women's action, top-ranked Caroline Wozniacki was upset by Julia Goerges for the second straight tournament, losing, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.
