news Sir Alex speaks up for Carlo : Sir Alex Ferguson has defended his Chelsea counterpart Carlo Ancelotti - ahead of a match that could all but ensure the Italian ends the season empty-handed.

If United beat the Blues at Old Trafford on Sunday, it would leave the West London club six points behind in the title race. The Reds also knocked Chelsea out of the Champions League, of course, while Ancelotti's interest in the Carling Cup and FA Cup ended prematurely with home defeats to Newcastle United and Everton respectively.

Sir Alex feels any flak for the Chelsea boss is unfair, however, especially as he was leading the Blues to an historic double only 12 months ago. In his exclusive column for United Review, the official match programme, the Reds boss said:

"Chelsea are a fine, experienced side, and I said months ago that they were the biggest threat to our championship hopes.

"I certainly have every respect for Carlo Ancelotti, an outstanding man and a great coach with a dignity that has helped him shrug off the unfounded criticism that dogged him a little while ago. Where it comes from, I’m not sure.

"To a certain extent he will understand criticism because there is plenty of it in Italy, but what he has experienced in England seems particularly unfounded. He has won both the European Cup and the Scudetto as player and manager and last season did the league and FA Cup double with Chelsea. He
