Oddsmakers from online sports book Bodog.com have released matchup odds for most of the contenders for today’s Kentucky Derby. So if you don’t want to pick an individual horse to win, place or show, you can wager on which horse you think will finish higher.
Twice The Appeal is currently going off at –165 on the money line to beat Comma to the Top, who is +135 on the money line. One of the main reasons why Twice The Appeal is such an attractive contender for bettors is because he’ll be ridden by jockey Calvin Borel, who has won three of the last four Kentucky Derbys.
Seeing as how Borel loves to ride the rail to victory, he must love the fact that Twice The Appeal will start from the No. 3 post position. That gate has produced eight Kentucky Derby winners, which is only four behind the rail and No. 5 positions, which have posted a Derby-high 12 victories apiece.
Twice The Appeal has also won three of his last four races, with his latest victory coming at the Sunland Derby (Grade 3) on March 27. Meanwhile, Comma to the Top hasn’t won since last December when he placed first at the CashCall Futurity (Grade 1). Since then, he’s placed fourth at the El Camino Real Derby (Grade 3), fourth again at the San Felipe (Grade 2) and in his most recent outing, he placed second at the Santa Anita Derby (Grade 1) behind Midnight Interlude.
It’s no wonder why oddsmakers favor Twice The Appeal in this matchup, although the Kentucky Derby has been all about upsets in recent years. Don’t forget that 50/1 long shot Mine That Bird won at Churchill Downs in 2008.
