This is the 10th year the site has given out the awards, with categories broken down into Best Luxury and Bargain, Best for Service, B&Bs and Inns, All-Inclusive, Spa, and Trendiest. In total, 3,943 properties globally have been recognized this year with dedicated lists featured for 30 countries and eight regions worldwide.
BARGAIN
Our annual favorite is the bargain category. Taking the No. 1 spot in the U.S. this year is the SeaCoast Inn in Hyannis, Mass. The hotel is not open during the winter, so we couldn't check for current rates, but its website lists $88-$128 for the upcoming spring season. The best bargain worldwide is the HueNino Hotel in Hue, Vietnam.
OVERALL
Another favorite is the overall winner for best hotel property in the U.S., and this year that honor goes to the Elysian Hotel Chicago. “The rooms are beyond beautiful, the service makes you feel like royalty, and the amenities are unparalleled. You won't be disappointed," a reviewer from Westlake Village, California wrote.
BED AND BREAKFAST/INN
The A.G. Thomson House in Duluth, Minn. got the award for best U.S. B&B or Inn. This Dutch Colonial Revival was built in 1909 and bought by Thomson in 1918. Guests like it for its architecture, natural surroundings, and hospitality.
The average nightly rate for 2012 Travelers’ Choice Hotels award winners is $270 and 45 percent have an average nightly rate of $200 or less per night. Average nightly rate for the Best Luxury hotels is $455, Best Bargain $106, Best for Service $255, B&Bs and Inns $124, All-Inclusive $488, Spa $376, and Trendiest $253.
BEACHES
The best beach in the world according to users of TripAdvisor is Providenciales, and island in the Turks and Caicos. White-sand beaches, calm clear water and a bountiful barrier reef make it a hot spot for families, snorkelers and divers. For U.S. travelers, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina grabbed the top spot.
DESTINATIONS
Best overall destination for the TripAdvisor 2012 Travelers' Choice Awards goes to Cape Town, South Africa. It was chosen for its scenic beauty, history, seaside setting, and proximity to a nearby nature reserve. In the U.S., travelers chose New York, New York. It was chosen for its seemingly unlimited bounty of tourist sites, but also its rich neighborhoods.
New Orleans, Louisiana is the No. 1 pick for travelers looking for great food and wine this year. The TripAdvisor site puts it this way: "Breakfast in New Orleans is relatively easy: go for beignets and chicory coffee. For lunch and dinner, though, you’ll have to choose from an almost bewildering array of options, from Cajun or Creole specialties to BBQ to some of the best French food you can find outside France." New Orleans is a foodie paradise. Read More TripAdvisor 2012 Travelers' Choice Awards - Complete list
