HTC doing well
HTC, on the back of its Android powered smartphones, had a spectacular year in 2010 with record profits. In fact, next to Apple and Samsung, it was one of the biggest mobile phone winners of the year. Of course, we’ve been waiting awhile for HTC to jump on the next mobile tech bandwagon, namely the touch screen tablet, which, just like the touch screen smartphone, was also pioneered by Apple.
HTC tablets incoming
Although there’s been no official announcement from HTC, and we didn’t see any HTC tablets among the many at CES 2011, the Taiwanese newspaper Digitimes has the scoop on a tablet codenamed Flyer and arriving in the US as early as March.
One of three
Apparently, the HTC Flyer is one of 3 total tablets that the company wants to release by the 2Q of 2011. Basically, the Flyer will be like a large HTC Desire (imagine the smartphone model pictured above but in a more rectangular shape), although we don’t know how large exactly. It will only run Android 2.3 Gingerbread, but at the same time it’ll be readily upgradeable to the tablet-optimised Honeycomb OS once it gets released.
Few details
Unfortunately, not much more information was given regarding actual specs, but we assume it’ll have at least a 1GHz processor (hopefully dual core), on top of a USB port, slim form factor, camera, 1080p playback, and maybe even an HDMI port. All the aforementioned specs are basically standard with the newest range of tablets.
Early March release
Digitimes further goes on to predict a March 2011 release date for the tablet, which will be available on a major US network. Considering we’ve seen and heard nothing of the Flyer – not even an appearance at CES 2011 – this release date might seem a little premature. But HTC apparently wanted to get their model out there before either RIM’s PlayBook or Motorola’s well-received Xoom. Regrettably though, the March launch only seems to refer to a US release, and we’ve received no info about either a UK or European launch.
