Research by Cancer Research UK shows that cancer is the number one fear among UK adults, above debt, knife crime and job loss. When asked to choose from a list of unfavourable scenarios, including being in a plane crash and developing Alzheimer's disease, one fifth of those questioned chose cancer as the most fearsome.
Yet few thought there was anything they could do to prevent cancer, with 34 per cent of respondents claiming fate would decide whether they contracted the disease. However, as Sara Hiom, Cancer Research UK's director of health information, pointed out, cancer is "no longer the death sentence people seem to dread".
"Long-term survival has doubled since the 70s thanks to better diagnosis, improved treatments and the development of nationwide screening programmes for breast, bowel and cervical cancers," she stated.
