Free Shipping Day tops online sales

Free Shipping Day tops online sales ; Free Shipping Day, the final online push for pre-Christmas sales, outpaced Black Friday online sales by nearly $300 million dollars this year, according to comScore. Shoppers spent $954 million on Dec. 17 for an increase of 61 percent over 2009.

Free Shipping Day capped a week that saw four days top $900 million each, for a grand total of $5.5 billion spent– the biggest week ever online for U.S. retail.

"People have latched onto Free Shipping Day as a legitimate shopping holiday, ranking it with the likes of Black Friday and Cyber Monday," said Luke Knowles, founder of Free Shipping Day, in a news release. "We're seeing a trend toward free shipping as the most sought-after online incentive, especially during the holidays. The ease of online shopping already caters to last-minute gift buying and Free Shipping Day is tailor-made for procrastinators."
