mississippi river, Rain forecast as Mississippi rises, Vermont flooding, Taliban attack : MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Rain is in the forecast for Memphis, Tenn., today. That's an unwelcome sight for residents watching the Mississippi River slowly rise. It's not expected to crest in Memphis until the middle of next week. While foreceasts suggest it will fall short of a record, the river is already at the second-highest level ever recorded in the city.

BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — It's not just the Mississippi River basin that's flooding this spring. Volunteers are filling sandbags in Vermont, hoping to keep Lake Champlain from flooding more homes along its shores. Officials in Burlington say about 50 residences have been affected by flooding. They say more homes could be flooded by waves if the wind picks up.


KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (AP) — Government installations in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar are under attack by the Taliban. A spokesman says the Taliban fighters are trying to seize control of the city, with the help of men freed in a prison break last month. The U.S.-led coalition has been fighting to restore stability to the former Taliban stronghold in a military campaign that's been going on for nearly a year.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Home videos of Osama bin Laden strolling the grounds of his compound in Pakistan are being released to the news media today, along with propaganda messages he recorded there. The videos were found after U.S. commandos killed the al-Qaida leader. Senior U.S. officials say items discovered in the hideout suggest bin Laden continued to play a strong role in planning and directing attacks by al-Qaida and its affiliates.

BENGHAZI, Libya (AP) — The golf world is remembering Seve Ballesteros (SEH'-vee by-ehs-TEHR'-ohs). The Spanish golf great died today from complications of a cancerous brain tumor. He was honored with a minute's silence at the Spanish Open, where his close friend and former Ryder Cup partner Jose Maria Olazabal (oh-lah-THAH'-bul) told reporters Ballesteros' charisma and passion were unsurpassed. Ballesteros was 54.
