The X Factor 2010 , ITV, The Final, Preview

The X Factor 2010 , ITV, The Final, Preview : After four months, 200,000 auditions and countless controversies, the talent search reaches its bombastic live climax. Welcome to the annual event dubbed “the Super Bowl of British television”, given the staggering prices it can charge to advertise during its breaks (£250,000 per 30 seconds at last count). Including tomorrow’s results show, it adds up to ITV’s most profitable four hours of the year.

Simon Cowell is determined to make this seventh final the biggest yet – partly because he’s rolling out a US version next year and wants to keep the franchise’s stock high, partly to smash the 20m ratings barrier (last year’s final peaked at 19.7m) and partly to help propel the winner’s single to Christmas number one (he failed to do so last year, in the face of a Facebook protest campaign). The four finalists – One Direction, Matt Cardle, Rebecca Ferguson and Cher Lloyd – will sing several songs apiece, including the traditional duet with an established star. One Direction will get the full Take That experience as they are joined by Robbie Williams for an 11th hour performance. Rebecca Ferguson will duet with Christina Aguilera, Matt Cardle will sing with Bajan star Rihanna and - most incongrously - Cher Lloyd will duet with rapper Will.i.am.

As well as the crooning contest on-stage, there’s the intriguing sub-plot of the warring judges: Cowell, Dannii Minogue, Louis Walsh and Cheryl Cole. Dermot O’Leary hosts. A nation expects. Cowell laughs all the way to the offshore bank.
