Sony Torment PlayStation 3 & PlayStation Portable Gamers

Sony Torment PlayStation 3 & PlayStation Portable Gamers : Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) is keen to engage with their community, and do so on a regular basis. From Blogs to forums to Twitter accounts, the SCEE community managers have all their bases covered. One of the most regular correspondence updates is that of the ‘Weekend Essentials’ update: typically a welcome rundown of the week’s new releases, but given the issues gamers have been having with PlayStation Network, the update comes with a bitter taste this week.

Featured in this week’s updated are all of the latest retail releases for both PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable (PSP), including Mortal Kombat, Portal 2 and Operation Flashpoint: Red River for PlayStation 3, and Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection for PSP,

Given that two out of the four are intended to feature onlineElectronic Theatre Image gameplay heavily in their raison d'ĂȘtre, it’s somewhat of a kick in the teeth for gamers who have already purchased the game and are unable to experience it to it’s fullest. What’s more insulting however, is the discussion of PlayStation Network specific releases.

While gamers did have an opportunity to download the recently released PlayStation 3 exclusive Red Johnson's Chronicles prior to the unexpected downtime, those who now wish to enjoy the game over the weekend have no option to do so. Additionally, along with Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Red Johnson's Chronicles is offered to PlayStation+ subscribers as free content – currently inaccessible free content, that is. The Fancy Pants Adventures suffers the same fate, though is not included as part of the PlayStation+ free content, as does the recently released demo version of Virtua Tennis 4.

While the Weekend Essentials update on the official PlayStation website is a regular feature, it may be seen as a little unnecessary to have updated this weekend, considering the ongoing PlayStation Network issues. Electronic Theatre will keep you updated with all the latest details on the downtime, and any further communications from SCEE.
