PlayStation Network is back online in the UK

PlayStation Network is back online in the UK : PlayStation Network is back online in the UK, after 25 days of downtime. The move is part of Sony's plan to phase in restoration of the online service on a country-specific basis. This initial phase is switching on PS3's in America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and the Middle East.

Users must first download firmware update 3.61 and change their PSN password either via the PS3 they originally registered the account with or a validated e-mail address.

This initial restoration includes access to the friends list and online gaming, but there is currently no PlayStation Store functionality. Sony has said it expects to restore PSN fully by the end of May.

"I'd like to send my sincere regret for the inconvenience this incident has caused you, and want to thank you all for the kind patience you've shown as we worked through the restoration process," said Sony executive deputy president Kaz Hirai earlier today in a video message on the PlayStation Blog.

Sony is offering more than words as an apology - all registered users will recieve a 'Welcome Back' pack as compensation, which includes a free month of PlayStation Plus and two unspecified free games from a list of four. You'll have to wait for PlayStation Store to return first, presumably.
PlayStation Network originally went down on April 20 after what Sony described as an "external intrusion" on the server. It wasn't until April 26 that Sony admitted PSN "account information was compromised."
